bass amps seem to be easier to do right...
our guitarist uses a Boogie, but he's having A LOT of problems with it...dunno the specifics...
makes a shitload of noise...
used to sound GREAT. loud as hell, loads of bottom, good crunch.
Probably needs to be re-tubed.
If you have a bad tube it will start to sound weird and make alot of extra noise.
Personally, my favorite is the Single rectifyer model... the dual and triples appeal to the Metal Gods... but you can take the 50 watt single and CRANK THE EVER LOVING SHIT OUT OF IT... and I like that sound better than a 100 watt amp at half volume. [img]wink.gif[/img]

That's the catch 22 with Tube amps.... they are CAPABLE of the coolest, sweetest, ball-crushing tone on the planet....
... but if the humitidy is wrong, or fuckin' saturn is in too close of an orbit with Jupiter, then you wake up one morning and they act all goofy for a while.
My Johnson J-Station can only get about 90% of the way there in making "THAT" tone... but it's always exactly the same and reliable... that's why it works so well for recording. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I used to play lead for a metal band from 89-91 or so...
used a Kramer Aerostar(CHEAP!!), a Fender Twin Reverb w/a Marshall 4x12, and a Traynor 400 watt bass head with a 10x8.

My very first rig was a 30 watt Marshall solid state practice amp... and when I joined a band I outputted it to an Ampeg 300 watt bass head and a 6 x 10 cabinet. That was SOOOO loud.
Later I ran the gamut of Dean Markley, Fender, Peavy, Galien Kreuger, Boogie (smaller combo), and Line 6.
One of the best metal sounds I ever had was a 50 watt Tube Marshall running through a Tom Sholtz Power soak (so the amp was always running FULL BLAST regardless of the volume) but tubes got expensive.
I had both a Line 6 Spyder and a POD... both I recently sold because they were versatile, but a bit to steril for my tastes. I think the Boogie sounds on the Johnson J-Station are much better (and the J-Station was 1/3 the price of my POD.
My buddy had a Hot-Rodded Marshall, then the Carvin Vai amp, and now he gigs with his Boogie Half Stack for all his Metal, Rock, Blues, and Jazz Fusion gigs... and he uses a Roland Chorus 50watt combo for some of the mellower Jazz gigs.
There is one place that I recommend in regards to anything musician oriented that I found they have good deals with (Including the Strat pack that the guys are talking about). American Musical Supply, which you can find here AMS

If you have the extra cash, it's well worth going to the <u>Standard Strat</u> over the Squire. (about $150 more) it's still Japanese or Korean made, but it's closer to the specs of the American series (neck design, better bridge, better pickups, better wood)
Also it will say FENDER on the headstock, not Squire, so it will be worth a bit more if you ever sell it (Squires have ZERO resale value)
DON'T mess around with footpedals... those are mostly for wanking off (admit it... they're icing on the cake... but if the cake tastes like shit, then it's still shit)
I'm really happy with the sounds from a Johnson J-Station that I bought, you can practice with headphones, output it to your stereo, computer, or an amp.
If you get back to the point where you're gigging, don't fuck around with a cheap ass amp.... I prefer Mesa Boogie, but there are other good amps out there. (not AS good as a Boogie, but close. [img]wink.gif[/img] )
